5 Reasons to Deliver Apps for Good as an Extra-Curricular Club
Running one of our free computing courses as an extra-curricular club is a powerful way to give more students the chance to explore technology, creativity and problem-solving without the constraints of the school timetable. Whether it’s a lunchtime STEM club or an after-school session, delivering outside of the curriculum can unlock new opportunities for both students and staff.
Here are five reasons why an Apps for Good club could be a great fit for your school:
1. A welcoming route into computing
Because our courses focus on real-world problems, clubs may attract and engage students who wouldn’t usually choose computing. Students interested in social issues, the environment or design can all find a role within an Apps for Good club, helping them see how technology connects to their interests. Clubs are a great way to increase participation in computing at your school, and show students that there are different ways to be involved in tech.
Clubs can also provide a route into something new for teachers too! With fully prepared resources and ongoing support from the Apps for Good team, clubs are an accessible, low-pressure way for teachers with little or no computing background to try something new and build their confidence.
2. Access for all students
An extra-curricular club provides an equitable option for all, opening the door to students who might not otherwise experience Apps for Good through the curriculum. Learners across different year groups can take part, giving older students the opportunity to support younger ones, building leadership skills and creating a collaborative learning culture.
Clubs also offer a more relaxed environment that might work better for some students. Some learners may prefer working in smaller groups, which can boost confidence and encourage participation.
3. A space to follow passions
For students with a strong interest in app design, coding or problem-solving, a club provides the time and freedom to explore this further. Students can spend longer developing their ideas, focusing on what matters to them most.
Bringing together students with similar interests can also help them to form new friendships. Students at Cedars Upper School highlighted making close friendships through their Apps for Good club - connections they may not have made otherwise.
4. Flexibility for schools
Delivering Apps for Good as a club gives teachers flexibility where timetables are tight. Lunchtime or after-school sessions can make our courses accessible even when curriculum time is limited.
Clubs can also run at a pace that suits your students. Rather than fitting into a fixed number of hours, you might stretch the course over two terms or even across the school year, allowing students to develop their ideas further and focus on their interests in more detail.
5. Creativity without curriculum pressure
Extra-curricular delivery allows students and teachers to think beyond curriculum requirements and really focus on creativity, teamwork and real-world impact. Students often take greater ownership of their projects when they can work at their own pace and follow their curiosity.
This flexibility also makes it easier to bring in external voices. Clubs can be enhanced with Industry Engagement sessions, giving students the chance to share their ideas or talk with real-life professionals working in tech and hear first-hand about different career pathways.
