Apps for Good is among six education charities and social enterprises to receive funding and volunteer support to increase the reach and number of people that can benefit from our computing courses.

The DeepMind programme, which aims to boost existing programmes through funding, volunteering, and new AI resources aims to reach over 500 schools (over 10% of UK secondary schools) and over 100,000 young people, with a focus on state schools and students from underrepresented groups.

This generous support from DeepMind, will enable Apps for Good to reach 50 schools, with students experiencing disadvantage, with our Innovate for Climate Change course during 2022/23. The course will be available to students aged 11-14, in particular those from backgrounds underrepresented in the technology sector.

Natalie Moore, CEO of Apps for Good said, "At Apps for Good, we believe that young people can shape their future through technology, so we're on a mission to ensure that whatever your background, you have an opportunity to develop the tech innovation skills to thrive in an ever-changing world. We're really excited to be joining forces with DeepMind in a collective effort to increase access to STEM education and remove the unnecessary barriers to creating an inclusive tech sector."

Obum Ekeke, Head of Education Partnerships at DeepMind commented, “At DeepMind, we have a long-term vision to support the next generation of AI creators, ensuring they truly represent the wider world. This vision starts with education. By focusing on education at an early age and making science and AI feel relevant and accessible to all, there’s an opportunity to help break down the barriers that are leading to underrepresentation in this field. Our hope is that this education programme can help instil confidence in the next generation of students and eventually play a part in creating an inclusive and accessible global AI ecosystem.”

DeepMind is in great company, joining existing supporters of Apps for Good's new climate action computing course, including BNY Mellon, RSA, SHCJ, EPAM, Google, Garfield Weston Foundation and Siemens. Innovate for Climate Change is available now and thanks to the generous support of these partners, is 100% free to schools.
