We’re proud to be a learning organisation, driven by the positive impact we have on young people. In return for our free computing courses, all we ask schools for is feedback. We’ve been listening to your feedback - both from students and teachers - and also listening to what’s happening in the wider education space and the world of work. Love it or loathe it, AI is increasingly present in young people’s lives, not to mention its relevance to their future jobs. This is why it’s time for change.
If you’ve been with us a while, you’ll know that at the heart of Apps for Good’s mission is to help young people take on real world problems that truly matter to them, and give them the digital literacy and essential skills to create apps to help address their challenge. This has not changed. In fact, it matters more than ever. But as technology evolves, and the exposure our young people have to AI increases, the more important it becomes to protect them from risks around safety, wellbeing and misinformation. It’s vital to learn how AI is created, the ethical considerations, AI bias and its impact on, and benefit to society.
Introducing AI for Good 2.0!
AI for Good 2.0 is our brand new computing course designed to help you take young people from passive consumers, to responsible creators of technology. It’s a free, project-based AI course where learners design and build AI–powered apps for social impact, using either JavaScript or AI assisted “vibe coding” in Canva Code.
The course is flexible, adaptable, and modular, with interactive resources designed to suit different learning styles. It can be delivered within core computing lessons, as an extracurricular club, or as a short two-lesson introduction to AI and ethics. We take a project-based approach, where students take the lead in choosing real-world problems that matter to them, then design, train, and apply machine learning models to build AI-powered apps. Teachers and learners are supported throughout with video walkthroughs, visual prompts, bite-sized CPD, and ready-to-use lesson slides and worksheets. Industry engagement features throughout to share real-world inspiration and feedback. Along the way, students develop problem-solving, teamwork, communication, and creativity through Skills Builder skill steps, building both computing and essential skills to prepare them for a fast-moving, AI-driven world.
Students choose their coding route
In AI for Good 2.0, students choose their coding route to build their working app, reducing barriers to engagement in computing. There are two student-led pathways within a single course, so teachers deliver the same course regardless of the route individual students choose. The coding pathway uses JavaScript to build AI-powered apps, while the vibe coding pathway uses Canva Code and structured prompting to create working apps without coding. The teacher teaches one lesson, and the students have the power of choice to take their learning in whichever direction they're excited by. Both pathways lead to the same learning outcomes.
A modular approach to suit different needs
Designed for KS3 / S1–S3 aged young people, but adaptable for different ages, AI for Good 2.0 is designed as a 12-session course, (our recommended option), but we listened and understand that teachers need flexibility. The course is designed to be modular, adaptable and flexible to suit different settings and timetables, so you can enter at different levels to suit your learners and their knowledge.
Support for teachers and learners
For teachers - there are brilliant bite-sized CPD videos, downloadable slides, oracy sheets, FAQs, as well as printable and editable guides. The course remains suitable for non-specialist computing teachers, as well as those who have been teaching computer science with confidence for years. If non-specialist teachers need a little extra support with the coding aspects, the support is all there in the resources. For students - there are visual walkthroughs, scaffolding for tasks, printable case studies, skeleton code, ‘get unstuck’ flow charts and stretch tasks for students who want more.
Evolution, not revolution!
If you’re already delivering a legacy course - Innovate for Climate Change, AI for Good (1.0) or App for Social Action, you’ll be pleased to know technology for social and climate action is still at the heart of Apps for Good — that hasn’t changed. Much of the inspiring climate change and social action content from the legacy courses remain, encouraging students to continue designing apps that make a positive impact on their own lives and communities.
With AI becoming increasingly relevant in young people’s lives and the realities of AI in the workplace, we’ve evolved the programme to bring these themes together in one updated course: AI for Good 2.0. Rather than offering three separate courses, with AI as a separate theme, the new course combines social action, climate change and AI, with “AI for good” embedded throughout. Showcase and Industry Engagement remain pivotal in AI for Good 2.0, ensuring young people have access to industry role models as well as having an opportunity to celebrate their achievements in our annual competition.
We’d love to support you to develop your students’ learning journeys with AI for Good in the next academic year.
AI for Good 2.0 is 100% free of charge for schools!
As with all Apps for Good learning experiences, thanks to the generous charitable donations of our partner organisations, AI for Good 2.0 is 100% free of charge to schools. All we ask is for feedback, so that we can manage our impact and continue to learn how to improve the courses we give you.
Want a taste of what’s to come?
